Sometimes you find an essay that says it

better than you can. Howard Zinn's is such an essay (actually, transcribed from a speech).

I feel like a passenger on a ship that's got a massive leak. In the midst of disaster we have a new captain, who has sent all hands to man the pumps. And this guy says they're pumping in the wrong place. We're all going down by the bow.
